When I started writing songs, I never really thought of it as a career. I was simply writing because I had something to say. Sometimes it was a feeling, sometimes a story, and sometimes just a line that came into my head and refused to leave. But over time, I started wondering: Can writing songs actually become a career?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short answer is yes. But the longer answer is a little complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Songwriting can be a career, but it doesn’t work like a regular 9-to-5 job where you know exactly how much you’ll earn every month. It takes time to build your name, your network and your portfolio. And if you’re an independent songwriter, you often have to learn much more than just writing lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Don’t Have to Be a Famous Singer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One thing I like about songwriting is that you don’t necessarily have to be the person standing in front of the microphone. There are many songs where the songwriter isn’t the singer. You can write for another artist, a film, a web series, an advertisement or even another independent musician. If you’re good at creating lyrics and melodies, there are opportunities beyond releasing your own songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, being a singer-songwriter has its own advantage<\/strong>. You can write, compose and perform your own material. That’s the path I’ve personally chosen, but it isn’t the only way to build a career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your First Songs Probably Won’t Be Your Best Songs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is something I think every new songwriter should understand. When you start writing, you may believe every song you write is going to be amazing. Then, after a few years, you listen to those old songs and realize how much you’ve changed. That’s completely normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Songwriting is a skill that improves with practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more songs you write, the better you become at understanding lyrics, melodies, structure and emotions. You also become better at knowing which lines are worth keeping and which ones should probably be deleted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So don’t wait until you think you’re a “perfect” songwriter. Write.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Need to Understand Music, Not Just Words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Writing lyrics is obviously important, but if you want to write songs professionally, I think understanding music gives you a huge advantage. You should have at least some understanding of melody, rhythm, chords and song structure. When you know how music works, you start writing differently. You begin thinking about how many syllables a line has, where a word should land, how the melody should move and whether a particular line actually sounds good when sung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beautiful sentence isn’t necessarily a good lyric. A good lyric has to work inside a song<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Producing Your Own Songs Can Help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I personally produce my own songs, and that’s become a very important part of my songwriting process. When I write something, I usually already have an idea of how I want it to sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being able to produce allows me to experiment with that idea instead of waiting for someone else to turn it into music. You don’t have to become a professional producer to be a songwriter. But learning basic production can make you much more independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can create your own demos, experiment with arrangements and show other musicians exactly what you have in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Internet Has Changed Things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A songwriter today has something that wasn’t easily available to previous generations: the ability to publish independently. You don’t necessarily need to wait for a record label to discover you. You can record your song, release it digitally, build a website, upload your work and find listeners yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn’t mean getting attention is easy. It isn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the opportunity to put your work out there is available to almost everyone and that’s a huge change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Does the Money Come From?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is probably the question most people actually want answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re thinking about songwriting as a career, you need to understand that your income can come from different places. You might earn from writing songs for other artists, composing for advertisements, licensing music, releasing your own music or working on film and web projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There can also be royalties and publishing income depending on the work and the rights involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But don’t expect your first few songs to suddenly start paying your bills. Building a songwriting career takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be Careful About Giving Away Your Rights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is something I wish more new musicians understood. When someone asks you to write a song for them, don’t look only at the amount they’re offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly am I giving them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they paying you to write the song?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they asking for exclusive rights?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do they want ownership of the composition?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you use the song somewhere else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can they modify it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These things matter. I’ve personally learned that creative work has value beyond the immediate payment. Sometimes a project may look attractive because someone is offering money, but the rights you’re giving away can be worth much more in the long run. Always understand the deal before saying yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Will Get Rejected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you want to write songs professionally, get comfortable with rejection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone may not like your lyrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A singer may choose another songwriter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A producer may decide to change the entire song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A project you were excited about may never happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be frustrating, especially when you’ve spent days or weeks working on something. But rejection doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a bad songwriter. Sometimes your song simply wasn’t right for that particular project. The important thing is to keep writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Own Website Can Become Your Portfolio<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I strongly believe that a songwriter should have a place on the internet that they actually control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media is useful, but your profile exists on someone else’s platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A personal website is different. You can put your songs, lyrics, biography, writing, credits and contact information in one place.If someone searches your name on Google, ideally they should be able to find your own website and understand what you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, this is one of the reasons I continue building my website rather than depending entirely on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is Songwriting a Good Career Option?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I would say yes\u2014but only if you actually love writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re getting into songwriting because you think it’s an easy way to make money, you may get disappointed very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are going to be songs that nobody listens to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be projects that don’t pay what you expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be people who don’t value the work as much as you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there will be plenty of days when you question whether you should continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you genuinely enjoy turning an emotion into a lyric, creating a melody from nothing and hearing your idea become a real song, then songwriting can be incredibly rewarding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My Advice to Anyone Starting Out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don’t wait for someone to call you a songwriter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write bad songs. Write good songs. Write songs that nobody hears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn production if you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborate with other artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Record your ideas instead of leaving them in your phone forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And most importantly, learn the business side of music along with the creative side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your lyrics have value. Your compositions have value. Your time has value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t be afraid to treat songwriting like a profession even before it becomes your full-time income.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
